Our 11th Park in our 8th State. At this park we are halfway up this peninsula headed to Copper Harbor.  We really saw a lot and learned a great deal about the area.  We thoroughly enjoyed our trip up the peninsula

We are at Keweenaw National Historic Park, Calumet, MI  At one time Copper Mines lined this entire peninsula.

Keweenaw's Copper Story

From 7,000 years ago to the 1900s people mined Keweenaw copper. Native peoples made copper into tools and trade items. Investors and immigrants arrived in the 1800s in a great mineral rush, developing thriving industries and cosmopolitan communities. Though the mines have since closed, their mark is still visible on the land and people.

This Visitor's Center is located in the Union Hall.

When an audience is gathered I never miss an opportunity to speak.  I had a hard time getting a response from this crowd.

One of the Historic Landmark of this Park is Laurium Manor.  It was originally the home of one of the "Copper Barons".

It is now a B&B.  It was a delightful place to stay.

Many copper mining companies in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula followed a management practice known as corporate paternalism. The companies provided housing, schools, hospitals, libraries, bath houses and other amenities in order to attract and retain a loyal and productive workforce.

If you visit this park make time to visit the Jam Pot and Copper Harbor!!!
